Chelsea vs Manchester United
England – Carabao Cup
Date: Wednesday, 30 October 2019
Kick-off at 20:05 UK/ 21:05 CET
Venue: Stamford Bridge (London).
Chelsea welcome Man United to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, as they look to secure their eighth win in a row. The visitors, who’ve won their last two, are looking to go on a winning run of their own.
An impressive run continued for Chelsea on Saturday evening, as they once again showed their attacking power in scoring four on route to victory against Burnley. Their defending was called into question, as it often has been, but a lack of defensive solidity doesn’t seem to be hampering Frank Lampard’s men, who’ve now won each of their last seven in all competitions.
The Blues’ performances at Stamford Bridge has been particularly good. On their own patch, Lampard’s side have only won two out of five, though their underlying numbers are impressive, as they’re averaging 2.26 expected goals for and have surrendered an average of just 0.74.
While Chelsea have generally looked good at home, Man United have struggled a bit on the road, winning just one out of five travelling Premier League matches. They too have reasonably decent underlying numbers, averaging 1.68 expected goals for and conceding an average of only 0.89. That said, such figures are skewed by their dominant performance last time out. Prior to beating Norwich, United were averaging just 1.15 expected goals for, while they’ve looked far worse than Wednesday’s hosts in terms of end-product too.
What’s more, Ole Solskjaer’s men delivered a disappointing performance in the previous round of this competition, as they required penalties to see off League 1 Rochdale. Chelsea on the other hand, battered League 2 Grimsby, once again showing no lack of end-product.
From a betting point of view, ‘Chelsea to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’ looks good. Chelsea have shown more than United in terms of both creativity and end-product, so much so that they look a good bet to get the job done. However, we shouldn’t expect them to run riot. As we all know, United no longer strike fear into their opponents, but we shouldn’t ignore the fact that they haven’t given a great deal away on the road this term, conceding more than twice at no point.
Chelsea Team News
Chelsea continue to be without Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Andreas Christensen. Having been on the bench at the weekend, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi are likely to start.
Manchester United Team News
Diogo Dalot, Paul Pogba, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Eric Bailly remain out for United. Nemanja Matic is also unlikely to feature. After coming off the bench last time out, Jesse Lingard and Mason Greenwood should start.
