On May 6, 2019, in his home country of Mexico, Saul “Canelo” lvarez will defend his title against John Ryder for the vacant Super Middleweight title at the Akron Stadium in Mexico. It will be his first fight in the country in over twelve and a half years.

After successfully defending his Undisputed title against Gennady Golovkin in September in Las Vegas, lvarez will be looking to make it two in a row. In November 2021, he defeated Caleb Plant to take the IBF title.

On May 5, 2019, lvarez will be fighting in his home country for the fourth time and for the third time since he defeated Marco Antonio Barrera in Mexico City in May 2014. It has been over four years since he last fought in the country.

The 32-year-old lvarez will be fighting for the 63rd time in his professional career. It will be his 35th time in his home country and he will be fighting on the Cinco de Mayo holiday. It will be an amazing occasion as Jalisco is celebrating its 200th independence anniversary.

Ryder, who is a popular Londoner, is the mandatory challenger for the WBO Super Middleweight title. He will be fighting in Mexico for the first time in his 12-year professional career. In November, he defeated Zach Parker in London, England, and became the interim WBO champion.
