Chelsea’s form over recent weeks has been indifferent, but they managed to get a positive result on their last outing to recover from their drubbing in the first leg of their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich. The German side ran out comfortable 3-0 winners on that occasion. The Blues fought back from 2-1 down in their last outing to secure a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.
Marcos Alonso scored twice in that draw, but they now find themselves in a big challenge to secure their place in the top four. Chelsea’s home form has been a concern this season as they have won just once in their past three at Stamford Bridge. In the last round of the FA Cup, Chelsea saw off Hull City thanks to goals from Michy Batshuayi and Fikayo Timori. However, this will be a much bigger challenge.
Liverpool head into this game with questions surrounding their form for the first time this campaign. They have lost two of their past three fixtures in all competitions. During that run, they also scrambled to a 3-2 win against West Ham United. Their last outing was a stunning 3-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Watford. The defeat brought an end to Liverpool’s 44-match unbeaten run.
Ismaila Sarr scored twice in that victory for the Hornets, while Troy Deeney wrapped up the win with the third. It could have been worse for the Reds as they defended poorly throughout the game. They only managed one shot on target in the defeat, which was the lowest number that they have recorded since Jurgen Klopp has been in charge. In the last round of the cup, Liverpool beat Shrewsbury 1-0 in a replay following a shock 2-2 draw in the initial fixture. The Reds will need to be at their best to get the win in this fixture.
